The Viking’s creative mix of art and war is demonstrated by the decorated spearheads, which often carried intricate patterns created using the “Niello” process. This process involved rubbing an alloy of metals (notably silver) mixed with sulfur into an incised pattern and then firing it. The result is that the rubbed-in alloy remains black while the rest of the surface is polished to a bright finish. CAS Hanwei's decorating process provides a lustrous, permanent Niello-like effect. Each spearhead has a 1” shaft diameter. While these spear heads can be beautifully displayed solo, attaching them to a pole can lend a finished spear with greater authenticity and create a visually impressive highlight in Viking decor. With a pole, this head makes a perfect prop piece for film, theatre, or authentic costuming. However, a correct size pole for this model is currently not available. The XH2039 requires a thinner, lighter shaft, which is best found, as with the originals, in the wild. The dimensions of the spearhead are as follows: Length Overall: 16", Width Overall: 1-1/2", Shaft Diameter: 1", and it is made of high carbon steel, weighing 9.4 oz.
